How to do cold outreach right
(Scroll to the bottom for your subscriber TL;DR Bonus)
Cold outreach can be challenging, but using a strategic approach increases your chances of getting a response. Here are three steps to make your request effective the first time.
Step #1: Personalize Your Message
Make the message personal.
Say something like: “Hi [Name], I saw your post on [Topic] and was impressed by your insights. I’d love to ask a quick question about [Specific Issue]. Would you be open to a short chat?”
People are more likely to respond when they feel seen and valued.
Step #2: Be Clear and Concise
Be brief and very specific.
Use this format as an example: “I’m researching [Topic] and came across your expertise. Could you share your thoughts on [Specific Question]? It would take no more than 10 minutes.”
Clear, short messages respect the recipient’s time, making it easier for them to say yes.
Step #3: Offer a Low-Commitment Ask
Don’t ask for an hour to “pick their brain” - that’s a hard no right off the bat.
Do this instead: “I know you're busy, so even a quick reply or a resource suggestion would be incredibly helpful.”
A small ask feels less overwhelming.
Effective outreach is about personalization, clarity, and making small requests. When you respect people’s time and engage authentically, you increase your chances of getting a response. Use these steps to improve your cold outreach today.
